Frightfully Good Music

We provide the guide to your Halloween soundtrack
by Al Kaufman

Pity poor Halloween. While Christmas gets all the glory, Halloween is clearly the superior holiday. There is none of the pressure of Christmas with all of the fun. When else would you be able to knock on a stranger’s door and have them willfully give you candy? When else would you be able to dress up as anyone you want and not be taken to the local psychiatric ward?

Yet while every artist has done his or her inevitable Christmas song or album, only Boris Pickett is known for his Halloween tune, “Monster Mash.” Now, thanks to the glories that are Napster and itunes, you can create your own Halloween soundtrack, and we here at UP AGAINST THE WALL want to help. Just download these beauties, throw a white sheet over your head, and you’ll be the hit of any Halloween party. Of course, we also recommend that you spike the Halloween punch.

My personal pick is "Do They Know It's Halloween", a spooky 2005 Alt-Rock All-Star parody of 80's Aid Songs. It features the voices from Elvira Mistress of the Dark, The Arcade Fire, Beck, David Cross, Sonic Youth, Sum 41, Malcolm Mclaren, The Postal Service, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and more.
